Mystery tenant building new $700 million, 10-building, 2 million square-foot business campus in Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley Office Park: Who’s Got New Digs?

Mar 25, 2014 | The VAR Guy

Late last week, officials in San Jose, Calif., approved construction of a new $700 million, 10-building, 2 million square-foot business campus—the biggest-ever office park in the city’s history—which mayor Chuck Reed confirmed will be occupied by one IT industry company but declined to say who, what or when.

The facility, which will sit on more than 30 acres, could house upwards of 10,000 employees and has space for some 7,000 parking spaces. Who’s the mystery IT tenant signed on to take over the choice space right around the block from the busy San Jose airport, the de-facto port of entry to Silicon Valley? Right now, neither Reed nor the project’s developers are talking, sparking widespread speculation in the area about the new renter’s identity.

The multi-unit complex is a testimonial to the sizzling Silicon Valley economy, where the big numbers are sometimes so distorted as to appear comical. Even amid a slow-growing economic climate, the Valley added more than 46,000 jobs in 2013, a 3.4 percent gain from 2012. Whoever takes over the new San Jose business complex will become the second largest employer in town, behind only Cisco Systems (CSCO), which currently houses nearly 13,000 workers locally among its 75,000 personnel worldwide.
